How we build a shower

Most of our showers start with a Schluter Kerdi-Shower Kit or a Wedi Fundo pan: a pre-sloped foam pan, integrated curb, Kerdi-Drain, and Kerdi membrane bonded over every wall. The result is a fully waterproof shower envelope before any tile gets set — water that gets behind the tile or grout still has nowhere to go.

For curbless and barrier-free showers we build the slope into a cement-board substrate, install a linear drain (Quick Drain, Infinity or Schluter Kerdi-Line), and tie the bathroom floor membrane into the shower membrane in a single continuous waterproof plane. It's more labour-intensive than a traditional curb but it's the future of accessible Calgary bathrooms.

Floors, niches and benches

Bathroom floors get heated where you want them — see our heated floors page — and tile to suit the look. Niches are built into the framing whenever possible (not bolted onto the wall after) and waterproofed as part of the shower envelope. Benches are framed, waterproofed and tiled to slope toward the drain so water doesn't pool on the seat.

The details that matter

Mitered outside corners instead of bullnose. Schluter profiles in matching anodized colours where miters aren't possible. Grout colour chosen against your tile in your actual bathroom light. Caulk — not grout — in every change-of-plane joint, in a colour matched to the grout. Shower glass scheduled to template the day the tile is grouted so it goes in clean.
