Basement flooring is one of the most common calls we get, and one of the most misunderstood. What works beautifully on the main floor can fail or feel wrong in a basement. Calgary's climate makes this even more specific.

Most Calgary basements sit on concrete slabs. Concrete is porous, even in a dry year, moisture moves through it from the ground below. Basements also run cooler than the main floor, in winter a Calgary basement without in-floor heating can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the floors above. Freeze-thaw cycles in Alberta cause concrete to move over decades, and slight cracks in older basement slabs are normal.
Moisture testing, do this first
Before any flooring gets ordered for a Calgary basement, the slab should be tested for moisture. The calcium chloride test measures how much moisture is evaporating from the concrete surface over a set period. LVP is the most practical choice for most Calgary basements, quality SPC-core LVP is waterproof through its full thickness, installs over concrete with a foam underlayment, and handles temperature variation well. Engineered hardwood can work if moisture readings are acceptable and the space is properly conditioned. Solid hardwood should not go in a Calgary basement. Porcelain tile is completely moisture-immune and works well in basement bathrooms and wet bars. Carpet stays popular in basement bedrooms for warmth, but only when moisture testing is clean. Laminate is the one to avoid, most laminate swells when exposed to moisture at the edges.
