You're standing in the kitchen, coffee in hand, and there it is. A crack running clean across one tile, right where the dishwasher door swings open. First question every homeowner asks me: can you just fix that one tile? Sometimes yes. Sometimes that crack is telling you something bigger is going on under the floor, and cracked tile repair in Calgary isn't as simple as popping in a new piece and calling it done.

I've been pulling up broken tile in this city for a long time. Bungalows in Bowness, newer builds in Auburn Bay, condos downtown. The causes change a little by neighbourhood, but the diagnosis process doesn't.

Hard water leaves its own fingerprint too. It won't crack a tile on its own, but mineral buildup around a cracked grout line lets moisture sit longer than it should, which weakens the bond underneath and makes the next crack more likely.

Can you just replace the one tile?

Sometimes, yes. If the crack is isolated, the subfloor underneath is solid, and you've got a matching tile or leftover box from the original install, a single tile swap is a half-day job. We cut out the grout lines, pop the tile without wrecking its neighbours, scrape the old thinset flat, and set the new piece.

The catch is matching. Tile lines get discontinued constantly. If your floor went in six or eight years ago, there's a real chance the exact tile isn't made anymore. We can sometimes source a close match, or pull a spare tile from a low-traffic spot like a closet and move it to the visible crack, then patch the closet with something close enough that nobody but you will ever notice.

When a cracked tile repair turns into a full retile

Here's where I have to be straight with people, because plenty of contractors won't be. If you've got more than one or two cracks spread across the floor, especially in a line or a cluster, that's not bad luck. That's a pattern. And a pattern almost always means the subfloor is moving.

I've walked into kitchens where the homeowner wanted one tile fixed, and by the time I finished checking the floor with a level and a few taps of a hammer, we found six hollow spots and a section of subfloor that had started to sag. Replacing that one tile would have looked fine for about four months. Then a new crack shows up two feet away, and now you're paying for two repairs instead of doing it right the first time.

If the movement is structural, the fix isn't a tile, it's the floor underneath. That might mean adding blocking between joists, replacing damaged plywood, or installing an uncoupling membrane before any new tile goes down. It costs more up front. It's also the only version of "fixed" that actually stays fixed through a Calgary winter.
