Step 1, subfloor inspection and prep
This is the most important phase nobody talks about. Before a single board goes down, the subfloor gets checked for flatness, moisture, and structural integrity. The industry standard is flat to 3/16 of an inch over 10 feet. Older Calgary homes often need leveling compound or subfloor repairs before hardwood installation can start. Skipping it is the single biggest reason hardwood develops problems within the first two years.
Step 2, acclimation
Hardwood is a natural material that responds to its environment.
