An honest installer's guide to natural stone floors in Calgary, looks, maintenance, sealing, and where each stone actually works.
Every year we install stone floors for clients who've done their research on aesthetics and almost none on maintenance. Natural stone is genuinely beautiful. It's also the most demanding flooring category we work with. This guide is for buyers who want to go in with clear eyes.
Marble, the beauty and the reality
Marble has a look no manufactured product fully replicates, veining, warmth, the way it reads differently in morning versus afternoon light. The practical side, marble is porous and reactive. It absorbs liquids, a glass of red wine left on unsealed marble leaves a stain. Lemon juice and vinegar etch the surface chemically. Best applications in Calgary, master bathroom floors, shower walls, fireplace surrounds, and feature walls. Not the best choice for kitchen floors in most Calgary households.
Travertine, the warm alternative
Travertine is a form of limestone with a distinctive texture, warm earth tones, and natural pitting across the surface. Filled travertine has those pits filled with grout or epoxy. Unfilled creates a more rustic look but requires more cleaning attention. In Calgary with hard water, mineral deposits accumulate in the pitted surface over time, particularly in showers. Works well in entryways, main floor living areas, bathroom floors in lower-traffic spaces, and covered outdoor areas.
Slate, the durable one
Slate is the most practically durable of the natural stones commonly used in Calgary homes. Its natural cleft surface is also its best slip-resistance feature. Slate doesn't need polishing, doesn't etch, handles moisture well, and resists staining better than marble or travertine. The trade-off is colour variation between pieces in a batch can be significant. Best for mudrooms, covered outdoor spaces, basement bathrooms, and utility areas.
Installation differences from porcelain
Natural stone installation requires more care than porcelain at almost every step. Stone is heavier, which matters on upper floor installs and wall applications. Cutting natural stone is more complex. Not all mortars work with natural stone, white mortar is required under light-coloured stones like marble since grey mortar can bleed through. Back-buttering is non-negotiable on natural stone for full adhesion.

Sealing and the long-term commitment
Every natural stone floor in Calgary needs to be sealed after installation. Marble and travertine need resealing every one to two years. Slate can go longer. Refinishing is possible for most natural stone, honing removes surface scratches and restores the finish without full replacement.
