24x24 and bigger tiles look stunning but punish bad prep. Flatness, full mortar coverage, layout, and where it works in Calgary homes.
Large-format tile is one of the most requested finishes in Calgary right now, 24x24, 32x32, even 48x48 slabs that look like poured concrete or continuous stone. The look is clean, modern, and expensive in the right way. It's also one of the most demanding installs we do.
The flatness requirement
Large tiles can't flex. When a floor has dips or humps, small tiles conform to them, large tiles bridge them, which means one edge is supported and the other is floating. That's lippage, and on a 24x24 tile it's highly visible. ANSI requires a floor flat to 3/16 of an inch over 10 feet, and 1/8 of an inch over 24 inches for large-format work. Most Calgary homes don't meet that without prep.
The mortar difference
Large-format porcelain needs full coverage, minimum 95 percent contact between the tile back and the mortar bed. Installers use a larger notched trowel and back-butter each tile before setting it. Back-buttering adds time to every single tile in the project. Skipping it is common in rushed installations, tiles look fine at first, then over one or two Calgary winters with temperature cycling, tiles with inadequate coverage sound hollow and eventually crack.
Layout complexity on large format
Older Calgary homes are rarely square. Walls that look parallel aren't. A layout that looks right in one corner can produce awkward cuts on the other side. Diagonal layouts on large-format tile amplify all of these challenges, longer cuts, higher waste, and reference lines that need to be absolutely accurate.
Grout joint width
Rectified tiles can be set with very tight joints, 1/16 of an inch or less. Tight joints look sharp but require more precision. For most Calgary residential projects, a 1/8 inch joint on rectified large-format porcelain is the practical balance between clean look and installation tolerance.

Is large-format tile right for your Calgary project?
It works well in open main floor plans, primary bathroom floors, and feature walls. Where to be careful, older Calgary homes with subfloors that need significant leveling, bathrooms under 60 square feet, and any area where the budget doesn't include proper subfloor prep.
