Straight lay (grid)
The most common pattern and the most forgiving. Tiles run in a simple grid, joints aligned both ways. It installs faster than any other pattern, produces the least waste, and is the baseline for per-square-foot pricing. Best for large-format tiles, contemporary spaces, and any project where budget matters.
Running bond (offset)
Each tile is offset from the one below, like bricks. For tiles 15 inches and longer, a one-half offset can create lippage if the subfloor isn't perfectly flat. A one-third offset reduces this risk significantly and is why it's often specified by tile manufacturers for longer planks. Best for subway tile backsplashes, bathroom walls, and long hallways.
Diagonal (45 degrees)
Tiles are rotated 45 degrees so the corners point toward the walls. It makes a room look larger and draws the eye across the floor. The cost, expect 10 to 15 percent more waste than straight lay because of cuts at every wall edge. Best for square rooms, entryways, and spaces where you want the floor to feel larger.
Herringbone
Rectangles set at 90-degree angles in a V-pattern. It's one of the most recognizable tile patterns and also one of the most labour-intensive to install correctly. Every tile at a wall needs an angled cut, and maintaining consistent angle and joint width requires constant checking. The sweet spot for most Calgary bathrooms and kitchens is a 4x12 or 3x12 tile in herringbone. Best for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom feature walls, laundry room floors, and entryways.

Straight lay is the baseline price. Running bond adds minimal cost. Diagonal adds material waste cost and some additional labour.
